How old is your concrete?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is floor preparation so important for epoxy?

Floor preparation is the single most critical factor in epoxy coating longevity. Proper preparation ensures mechanical adhesion between the epoxy and concrete. Without it, coatings can peel, bubble, or delaminate within months.

What does diamond grinding involve?

Diamond grinding uses industrial machines fitted with diamond-tipped segments to mechanically profile the concrete surface. This creates a rough texture that epoxy bonds to. The level of grinding depends on the existing surface condition.

Do I need a moisture barrier?

Moisture barriers are essential for ground-level slabs in Sydney, especially in areas near the coast or with high water tables. A simple plastic sheet test (taping clear plastic to the floor for 24 hours) can indicate if moisture is present.

How much does floor preparation cost?

Floor prep typically costs $8-25 per square metre, depending on the extent of work needed. New, clean concrete may only need light grinding ($8-12/sqm), while damaged or coated floors may require heavy preparation ($18-25/sqm).

Can epoxy be applied over existing paint or coatings?

Generally no. Existing paints and coatings must be fully removed by grinding before applying new epoxy. Applying over old coatings risks delamination. Your contractor will assess and remove all existing coatings during preparation.
