What's your substrate?

Frequently Asked Questions

What substrates can epoxy be applied to?

Epoxy is most commonly applied to concrete substrates. With proper preparation, it can also be applied to some timber substrates and over existing coatings after full removal. Tiles generally need to be removed rather than coated over.

How do I do a DIY moisture test?

Tape a 600mm x 600mm sheet of clear plastic firmly to the concrete floor. Leave it for 24-48 hours. If condensation appears under the plastic or the concrete darkens, you have a moisture issue that needs professional assessment before coating.

Why is moisture testing important in Sydney?

Sydney's coastal climate, high humidity, and seasonal rainfall mean ground-floor slabs are particularly susceptible to moisture vapour transmission. This can cause epoxy coatings to bubble, peel, or delaminate if not properly addressed.

Can epoxy be applied over existing epoxy?

It depends on the condition of the existing coating. If it is well-adhered and in good condition, it may be possible to lightly abrade and recoat. However, most contractors recommend full removal to ensure the best bond and longest lifespan.

What is the minimum concrete age for epoxy application?

Concrete should be at least 28 days old (fully cured) before epoxy application. Newer concrete retains excess moisture that can prevent proper adhesion. A professional moisture test is recommended for any slab under 6 months old.
